Books LIVE invites applications for the position of Assistant Editor, a challenging and rewarding role within a digital media team that works at the nexus of South African writing and publishing.
This junior- to mid-level position will make the perfect fit for someone who’s passionate about local books, on the one hand, and developments in social media and the digital frontier, on the other. The successful applicant will have a solid general knowledge of English literature (and particularly its South African branch), excellent language skills, and basic technical abilities related to social media, blogging and website design, including basic HTML and basic knowledge of image manipulation programmes like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. A strong personal presence on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+) will be a plus.
A writing sample will be required of all shortlisted applicants.
Specifics
  • Full time contract position
  • Reporting to the Editor and Managing Editor
  • Minimum qualification: tertiary education/degree
  • Salary in accordance with work experience
Outputs
General editorial responsibilities:
  • Editorial planning assistance
  • Web reporter
  • Coverage of book launches and other events
General community responsibilities:
  • Help maintain and build the Books LIVE follower bases on standard social media
  • Assist community members with posting and on-site interaction
Skills
  • Excellent verbal, written and communication skills
  • Highly skilled at writing copy, especially for marketing communications
  • Ability to present creative and commercially sound recommendations for new content
  • Good understanding of and experience using social media channels, e.g., Facebook and Twitter
Knowledge
  • In-depth knowledge of and enthusiasm for books and literature, including South African books and literature
  • Familiarity with the South African online news and content sector
  • Understanding of marketing communications
  • General awareness of current book events
Attributes
